This morning was wrapped in worries and tied with a big bow of “what ifs?”.

I sat for a good part of the morning in a doctor’s office…never a good place to be…with my twelve year old son. A month ago we became concerned about an issue, and today was the day we would get answers.

I was worried and all the “what ifs” had flooded my mind for a month now. In an effort not to show it, I made jokes and we watched crazy weather vidoes together on my phone while waiting for the doctor. Finally, he came, and we were presented with a verdict that brought a wave of relief. My worries had been unfounded. The smile that had been missing from my son’s face all morning returned.

On the way home, we stopped by the Post Office to grab a package that was being held there for us. It was for my son. His eyes lit up at this unexpected brown box, stamped with that unmistakable half smile. At home, he ripped off the tape and pried open the flaps to reveal a couple birthday gifts from his Grandma.

His birthday was last week, and my mom had fretted that his gifts would be late. I tried to assure her it was fine, no worries. It was supposed to be delivered yesterday, but it was held up until today.

After watching my son battle scary tests and scans all morning, wrestle with the fear of the unknown, and answering hard questions about the “what ifs”, it was so timely to be able to see him delight in some unexpected gifts in the mail.

Sometimes, “late” is the perfect timing.

So go ahead and send that birthday card that’s a few days late. Maybe the phone call to a friend you meant to make last week is just what they need today. That visit you tried and failed to squeeze into your schedule last week? It’s not too late.

God sees what we cannot. Trust Him to do what only He can do, and use our offerings… whether they’re “late” or not… to move in the lives of those we connect with, because sometimes “late” is the perfect timing.
