Occasionally, the stars will align and I find myself sitting for a spell on my front porch. Anyone living the busy life will know just what a gift this is, which is why it felt a bit like Christmas in July when it happened to me this afternoon.
The sweet summer breeze was the perfect temperature, just cool enough to take the edge off the heat, but still warm from the July sun. As I sat in my rocker enjoying the moment, I became aware of the sound of my wind chime, musical in the ebb and flow of the gentle wind.

The breeze teased the chimes with its puffing, and each time, a new tune was created. Occasionally, the air would whip the windcatcher in a circular motion, releasing a tune with a repeating line. Around and around it would go, until it could no longer maintain the rotation, and the closing notes would be a jumble as the middle string came to a rest. Silences came with breaks in the wind. A chatter of bird song could be heard clearly in those moments between breezes. Then another breath of air would rise, and this time, the chime sang a different melody, mixing the four notes in a new way, with new timing conducted by the wind itself.
The music of the chimes seemed to me to echo the music of life.
We get tossed by the winds of this life. The gentle seasons produce a gentler song, while the storms bring a frenzy of notes, all falling over each other in what seems a cacophony of sound.
Have you heard the song “Remember When” by Alan Jackson? It’s an oldie, but a goodie. In his song, the seasons life bring each have a melody the couple of the song dance along to. I love the part where he compares the patter of little feet to music… I’ve always felt that line deep in my soul as my children have grown. Go listen to it if you’ve never heard it!
And then remember this.
The seasons of our lives each have a tune. A melody. A song for us to dance to.
The winds – the circumstances and seasons – bring the change. It can be gentle, or raging, or maybe somewhere in between, but each change brings beauty.
Because the song of your life is beautiful.
The light and airy notes mix with the dark and deep ones to bring forth a symphony created uniquely for you by God himself.

My blissful moments on the front porch today left me with a challenge.
Listen as the notes change with the winds that surely come, and hear the beauty in the melody.
Stop fighting the winds that bring the change.
Embrace it. Hear the music and dance along.
It’s the stuff life is made of, and your song is beautiful.
